OVERVIEW

Kang Guru is located in the Peri Himalaya range, between the Annapurna and Manaslu regions of the Naar Phu Valley. Kang Guru Peak is a technically challenging peak. It lies between 28°39’29.94″N latitude and 84°18’9.11″E longitude, at an elevation of 6968m.

From 1950 to 2023, 31 expeditions were conducted to climb this peak, with 260 climbers (including 160 men, 19 women, and 81 hired Sherpas). Among them, 18 expeditions and 81 climbers reached the top of this peak (52 men, 2 women, and 27 hired Sherpas). The success rate is only 31.15 percent. Bad weather and technical difficulties are the challenging factors for the ascent.

The first ascent was made by the German Nepal Expeditions on the West face-Northwest ridge, led by Heinz Steinmetz, with two climbers namely Fritz Lobbichler and Jürgen Wellenkamp, on July 2, 1955.

On October 20, 2005, a giant avalanche into a deep gorge below swept all the French and 11 of their Nepalese employees, who were inside their base camp tents after the members’ late afternoon tea. All 18 perished. This peak is one of the deadliest mountains with challenging terrain. As a result, the Rise Expeditions’s team explored a new route. It is comparatively challenging but safe from avalanches. This peak might be great for those who are preparing to climb big 8000 peaks in terms of this peak’s technicality, terrain, and slope where all mountaineering skills that require physical and mental preparation should be used.
